The Avon Trail May Close

The Avon Trail is 100 km long and runs from Water Street in St Marys through Stratford to Conestogo.   It has existed for 30 years but may close because with less than 100 members the group responsible for the trail cannot afford the insurance costs.   Its web site is at www.avontrail.ca

The 1.5km Riverview Walkway (click on photo to enlarge) marks the start of the trail and is maintained by the town of St Marys.

Moonlight Madness

St Marys downtown stores will be open until 11pm tomorrow Friday, October 21. There will be live music, costume contests and trick-or-treating at the stores. Also there will be a carved pumpkin contest; you can have your photo taken with a scarecrow; mulled cider is being sold at the Desjardins bank.

Living Life Project

What follows is what must be the 10th letter in the last 18 months to the local paper opposing the scheme to build a second hockey rink; a third swimming pool; a second fitness centre, etc. that will cost in its latest incarnation $12 million (about $6000 per household).

Dear Editor:

We have had two consultants tell the council that the Living Life Project is too expensive for a town like St Marys, that most of the people do not want the LLP, and that St Marys cannot even afford to maintain the LLP.

Yet the LLP lives on. What is council thinking? Whose side are they on? How do we stop this foolishness?

A Moose on the Loose

Today's Stratford Beacon-Herald is reporting that a Moose has been spotted north of St Marys in the Bornholm area. Perth county has a large population of deer but a moose is unusual. Moose are generally solitary and a male can weigh more than 1600 lb (725 kg).

Pumpkin Toss

Fall Harvest Celebration is on 11am - 4 pm weekends in October at McCully Hill Farm. The Great Canadian Pumpkin Toss is every 15 minutes with prizes awarded for the closest guess how far the pumpkin is tossed.
